Tuesday 8th June
Parade at 9.00 for Signalling instructions. Fairly easy day. Wrote home. Went to Romford and Hornchurch, after a book on Signalling. Unsuccessful.
Wednesday 9th June
Parade at 6.15 for march out in muck order. During day morse, semaphore, telephone and buzzer instruction. Went to Hornchurch, home early. Pouring rain between 6 and 8. Sent paper (“Globe”)
home as it had article about Signalling Battalion. Wrote to Wigman & Sons for “Map Reading and Field Sketching” 11d and amended part 1d.
Thursday 10th June
Signalling practice on Buzzer. Short walk in evening.
Friday 11th June
Marching before breakfast. At night game of billiards with Duncan and King. At swimming baths in Romford learning to swim. Letter from home.
Saturday 12th June
Early parade. 9 o'clock with Company for Ceremonial drill. Pay 1/-. Kit inspection. Wrote home. Parcel from home. At 6 o'clock took train to Ilford with King. Met some mademoiselles. Home with pass at 12.
Sunday 13th June
Church parade. Short walk in forenoon though Hornchurch. After tea took train from Emerson Park Halt to Romford. Missed the 6.8 for Ilford. Took 7.8 and when there fell in with 2 girls. Mine Lily, some girl! Promised to go back Sunday 27th at 6.30. Fairly enjoyed myself.
Monday 14th June
Early marching. Went towards Rainham from 9 to 11. Field buzzer in forenoon and afternoon. Wrote to Eth.
Tuesday 15th June
Early marching. 9 o'clock for Flag drill. 11.00 short march. Late dinner. Bad toothache. Afternoon faster buzzer from Sergeant. Mowat. Letter and Postal Order from home. Wrote home. Walked through Upminster with King. Met a little Londoner, a decent sport.
Wednesday 16th June
Letter from Mais. Late dinner therefore no afternoon parade. Out at Hornchurch at night at pictures.
Thursday 17th June
Letter sent home with group photos (4). Wrote Mr Ross and Bob. Received postcard from Eth. Easy day. Received book from Wigman.
Friday 18th June
Parades at usual. Box from home. Baths at night and played game billiards with King at Carlyle Institute.
Saturday 19th June
No early parade. Rehearsed marching past with Signallers in rear of battalion. Short period of semaphore drill. Pay 1/-. Went through Hornchurch in evening with Bob. Letter from Dai.
Sunday 20th June
Church parade. Practised buzzer with Duncan afterwards. Wrote to Bella Dick.
Monday 21th June
Parades at usual. Out in Upminster at night with King.
Tuesday 22nd June
No parade. Letter from home. Romford at night. Met little noisette. Home 10 pm with DK.
Wednesday 23rd June
Short march in morning. Packing up kit etc, preparatory to leaving for “somewhere”. Again in Romford with DK. Parcel from home.
Thursday 24th June
Everything bustle with Signallers. Company work as usual. Have by now been made a regimental signaller and transferred to Right Flank Co. Short walk in evening.
Friday 25th June
Things all packed and despatched for Clipstone, Notts at noon. Remained in camp all afternoon and evening. Muster roll call at 9.30 pm.
Saturday 26th June
Reveille 4.30 Breakfast at 5. Parade full marching order with Signallers at 6. Left Hornchurch 7 for Clipstone. At Nottingham given cup of tea. Arrived Edwinstone 3.30 and marched four miles to Clipstone Camp at 4.30. Tea at 6.00 ! Great mix up owing to Signallers having been entirely forgotten in arrangements.
